‘You gotta flop’ – Lewis Hamilton gave Daniel Ricciardo the idea for the iconic 2018 Monaco GP photo

Lewis Hamilton suggested Daniel Ricciardo do a flat stomach at the 2018 Monaco GP after the Aussie banished his demons.

Daniel Ricciardo created an iconic image during the 2018 Monaco GP. Lewis Hamilton had suggested he belly flop if he wins.

The 2018 Monaco GP was a very important race for Ricciardo as he had the opportunity to win the race that was taken from him in 2016. He became the third Australian to win the race after Mark Webber and Jack Brabham. He also picked up Red Bull’s first win at Monaco since 2012.

At a press conference at the time, Hamilton had given Ricciardo ‘the belly flop challenge’. After winning the race, the Aussie happily took it and performed the belly flop in the pool at the Red Bull Energy Station.

Daniel Ricciardo admits he failed to meet McLaren’s expectations

Ricciardo joined McLaren in 2021 and took his place alongside Lando Norris. In his first season with the Woking-based side, the Australian was outclassed by his young team-mate. Ricciardo finished the 2021 season in P8 while Norris was in P6.

Moreover, in the 2022 season, Ricciardo hasn’t been at his peak. After six rounds of racing, the Australian driver has only scored 11 points and is in 12th place.

Reviewing his performance, McLaren team boss Zak Brown said: “Daniel is not comfortable with the car yet. We are trying everything we can – again it was a disappointing weekend.

“Short of some kind of Monza and a few races, it usually doesn’t live up to his expectations or our expectations.”

Ahead of the race in Monaco this weekend, Ricciardo admitted that what his boss is saying is not wrong. He said, “That’s true enough.”

“Comments that I don’t take personally. My skin is tanned, beautiful and also thick. And I know I don’t want to run around 10th and 12th, you know, I still believe I can be up front and belong up front.

“So it’s been a bit safer to test at times obviously trying to get up and max myself out in that car.”

“But yes, we work hard together. And the team wants it. I want it. So yeah, we’re just working through that.
