Unknown Worlds, the video game studio credited with developing and publishing Subnautica (2018) and Subnautica: Below Zero (2021), is hiring for “the next game in the Subnautica universe” (H/T The Loadout).
On April 7, Unknown Worlds posted a new job posting for a Senior Narrative Designer to join the team already working on the third title in the Subnautica series.
“This person will work closely with the team to tell compelling and dramatic stories within the context of the game experience,” the Unknown Worlds job posting states, “while defining the history and lore of a new sci-fi world and its alien inhabitants. This individual has a unique opportunity to join the team early in development and help set the narrative direction for a beloved franchise.”
Considering that Unknown Worlds specifically mentions “the Subnautica universe” and a “new sci-fi world and its alien inhabitants,” it’s interesting whether or not the upcoming title will also take place on planet 4546B.
In recent years, the first two Subnautica titles have been hits in the open-world survival adventure genre by inviting players to build habitats, craft tools, and delve deeper into the secrets of the aquatic alien world.
Now, it looks like this third Subnautica title is looking to deliver the same formula and more, with the ideal candidate for the job being someone familiar with “open world games and the process of developing a narrative within the context of… ‘an open world’. -player-focused experience”, and has “experience working on live projects or episodic content”.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Subnautica and Subnautica Below Zero are both available on Xbox Game Pass, so it’ll be interesting to know if the new title follows the same pattern as well.
Of course, Unknown Worlds is also hard at work on another upcoming title right now. As announced in October 2021 after its acquisition by PUBG Corporation’s parent company Krafton, the studio is working on a new “genre-defining game” set to launch in early access in 2022.
According to their jobs page, Unknown Worlds is also looking to hire an “accomplished 3D environment artist to work on a new, unannounced franchise.”
