Made in Vancouver is a collaboration between Vancity and Daily Hive. Together, we shine the spotlight on local businesses, organizations and individuals who help create a healthy local economy.
Sometimes there is a concept or a business that really makes sense. Brilliant entrepreneurs are able to see these gaps in the market, often because it stems from their passions, their talents, and their ability to take the risk to actually do it.
It’s an understatement to say that the city of Vancouver loves their pets and Instagrammable photos. Emily Lim and Catherine Li are the owners of Kapture 9 Studios, a wildlife photography studio that opened in Richmond in February.
These two understand how important our pets are to us, and they just want to leave you with a memory that will last forever.
Vancity has supported people in our communities since 1946, such as local artists. As part of our Made in Vancouver series highlighting local businesses, we spoke with Emily Lim about this brilliant business idea that now seems so obvious.
“We aim to give owners unique photos of their pets,” Lim told Daily Hive. “Every pet that comes to the studio is different and we want to capture their quirks and personality,” she added.
Like all pet owners, these two Vancouver-area residents loved to take pictures of their dogs. Being photographers themselves and noticing that everyone was like them, they were inspired to pursue this idea.
“After taking pictures of our own dog and looking at the photos, we realized how much they meant to us,” Lim told us. “We started taking photos of the neighborhood dogs in our neighboring park and other owners really liked the photos of their dogs as well. Thanks to this, we decided to continue photographing pets, ”she added.
The incredible photos that they are able to capture are incredible. Just like people, their personalities really stand out in these pictures. Serious or wacky, these images capture the personalities of pets. Their work is entirely original, but they take inspiration from other talented people doing the same.
“Our number 1 influence is our dog Cappuccino, but some animal photographers we love are @ goodwolf.studio and @paw_shots, ”she said.
Because Vancouver is teeming with talented artists, the city understands and embraces amazing concepts. This is part of the reason why the city is so eclectic and welcomes local businesses. It can also be difficult to break through because there is so much quality work here.
“The biggest challenge was getting attention, ”Lim said. “There are so many talented people in Vancouver who offer different things, so going out and differentiating ourselves was the hardest thing,” she added.
Kapture 9 Studios has always met with impressive success, due to their hard work, experience and dedication to their craft.
“Catherine Li is one of the owners and photographer, ”said Lim.
“She graduated from Langara’s Professional Photography program in 2020. She spent part of 2020 working with a local retoucher before starting Kapture 9. With every shot we take, we try to do our best and to continue to improve our work, ”she added.
What keeps these two, the customers so happy and the success of Kapture 9 Studios stems from the same thing: the ability to keep a memory of the pets we love so much.
“The response from our customers has been overwhelming, ”said Lim. “Everyone made it such a positive experience for us. Being able to provide pet owners with a fun experience and photos they can treasure of their pet is such a blessing, ”she also added.
