These 5 interior design brands are furnishing houses for India and the world


With the increase in disposable income, more and more people are now focusing on improving the aesthetics of their homes. This has led to the growth of the Indian interior design market, with increased consumer spending. from $ 1,824 billion in 2017 to reach nearly $ 3,600 billion by 2020.

This growth was in line with the global interior design market which reached a value of $ 641.4 billion in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns that have disrupted the non-essential products market, the industry is now expected to show moderate growth between 2021-2026.

During the 1990s, the Mumbai-based brothers Ajay and Sanjay Arora worked in their family business, making and selling women’s fabrics and making affordable polyester silk imitations.

Seeking new opportunities, Ajay looked at fabrics and styles that were selling well. It was then that he saw a huge gap in the furniture industry. The demand for fabrics in the segment was booming, especially in international markets, and there were not many players to meet the demand.

“In 1997, I left for a trip to Heimtextil, the biggest textile fair in Europe, in Frankfurt. From there, I went to Como, Italy, to meet design houses. This way, I learned the ropes of the trade in the home furnishings industry for several months. Then my brother Sanjay and I left our family business to start making our own upholstery, ”he says. The company, which started as a modest fabric manufacturing unit in Mumbai in 1999, was named D’Decor. The brothers focused on delivering quality products that meet European standards at Indian prices. It did wonders for the brand and today D’Decor is the largest manufacturer of woven upholstery and curtain fabrics in the world.

The turnover business of Rs 1,500 crore has five manufacturing plants in Tarapur, India, producing over 1,20,000 square meters of high quality fabrics every day.

D’Decor exports its products to more than 65 countries, with the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom and the Middle East being its main markets. It is endorsed by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan and attracts consumers from all over India.

Vedas exports

Palash Agarwal, co-founder and director of Vedas Exports

In 2014, Palash Agarwal teamed up with his businessman father Pawan Agarwal to start Vedas exports by selling crafts and wooden paintings. However, they made a false start as they could only sell one product in the first month.

After further exploring the craft segment, Palash and his father decided to branch out into utilitarian decors such as wall hooks, shelves, mirrors, and table decoration, among others.

“These products had a bigger market and they could actually be used. Because they have an app, buyers are more likely to buy them, ”says Palash Agarwal, co-founder and director of Vedas Exports.

The father and son, respectively co-founder and director of the company, have organized exhibitions across the country and abroad to increase visibility and assure customers of the quality of the product.

The market responded well to Vedas’ efforts, leading to increased sales and pushing the brand to expand into the manufacture of vases, office decorations, and home décor pieces, among others.

Today, the 110-employee company manufactures handicrafts in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and exports them to international markets such as the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Europe.

Puneet Berry, founder of KSP INC

KSP was started by Puneet Berry as a B2B company that manufactured pipeline flanges for companies based in the United States. The business worked well for a few years.

However, in the 1990s, the United States put an embargo on stainless steel flanges from India and China, sparking fervor in the industry. Puneet saw this opportunity to evolve the business and seek another opportunity.

He remembers: “During my travels abroad, I was very fascinated by leisure spaces. In the United States, I have seen stores with temporary sheds with a garden and space for recreational activities.

This inspired Puneet to launch garden decoration products in 1991. While this line of business was doing well, Puneet saw its sales plummet.

Not wanting to fall behind in the market, he decided to diversify his product line again and in 2001 KSP Inc launched bird feeders. The company even landed a contract with a US company and currently exports bird feeders to more than nine countries.

Today, KSP manufactures several products including bird feeders, lawn and garden decorations, furniture, fireplace tools, home accessories and storage.

It exports to several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Canada, France and Australia. Some of its customers include Walmart, Lowes, Tesco, Sainsbury and Staples, among others.

Rahul Jain, Founder and Business Leader, eCraftIndia

Born and raised in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Rahul Jain has always been fascinated by the craftsmanship of the state. Whether it is the fascinating katputli puppets, the ornate mochdi shoes or the colorful bracelets – the handicrafts of Rajasthan are sought after around the world. But when Rahul, 31, walked into a Mumbai mall to buy a gift for a friend, he was shocked at the exorbitant price of Rajasthani handicrafts.

“I am from Rajasthan and I know how much a piece of Rajasthani handicraft costs. The selling price of this item was four times the actual cost and I was shocked to see that there was no predefined market for these artisanal products, ”says the entrepreneur. SMBStory.

In 2014, Rahul, with Ankit Agarwal and Pawan goyal, founded with seed capital of Rs 20,000.

Launched in 2014 as a small online craft store selling wooden elephant centerpieces as a first product, which cost around Rs 250, is currently one of the largest craft e-stores in India. Sanjeev Aggarwal, founder of Orvi

Coming from a typical Marwari business family in Jaipur, he was natural for Sanjeev Aggarwal to run a business after graduation. In 1993, using his savings of 30,000 rupees, he started a business exporting stones to various countries after purchasing materials from quarries in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and southern India.
