Take a trip to Puerto Rico with Pachyman

Pachyman is the one-man dub band led by Puerto Rican-born Los Angeles-based artist Pachy Garcia. His first album for ATO Records, The return of…, released on August 13, so to celebrate, he has concocted a playlist retracing a brief history of Puerto Rican music. Check it out!

Fantasies – “Mother of Monsters”

A true gem of Puerto Rican psyche rock. Recorded in a chamber by multi-instrumentalists Mario Negron and Dario Morales, Red moon reveals influences from unprecedented eras of psych rock and has proven to be a timeless and unique work of art. Few records come close.

Ramito – “Triste y Solitario”

Original rural music from the mountains of Puerto Rico. Ramito’s unique voice and music has always been a part of my family’s musical repertoire. The lead guitar-like instrument is called Cuatro, and that’s our thing.

Mima – “El arca de Mima”

One of our best contemporary singers and writers, Mima has a long and complex career as a musician. A true artist, visionary and inspiring female figure in the queer community. Always develop your profession and reinvent yourself. On this tune, she takes the rural sound and writing style of our predecessors and shapes it into her own voice and sound.

La Sonora Ponceña – “Nosotros”

One of my favorite records of all time. A true masterpiece of salsa from top to bottom. It’s really hard to choose a song on this album, so I’m leaving here with one of the sexiest ballads I’ve ever heard. La Sonora Ponceña was founded in 1954 and still plays today.

Orquesta Zodiac – “Panteon de Amor”

Straight from the streets of Santurce comes Orquesta Zodiac, with the raw sound of salsa in its purest form. Santurce is known to be the city where many legendary musicians and salsa singers were brought up, and it is still the mecca of art and culture on the island. Raw power on this track. El sonido campeón.

Buscabulla – “Ta Que Tiembla (Pachyman Remix)”

Raquel and Luis form the duo known as Buscabulla, a global phenomenon in the making. Buscabulla has gone through many different phases during his short career and they just keep getting better. I have to choose this Pachyman x Buscabulla remix because it’s one of my favorite collaborations I’ve done so far. Stricly Lovers Rock atmosphere.

IFE – “BANGAH (Pico y Palo)”

Otura Mun has been a taste maker and musical influence in Puerto Rico for over a decade. He’s a producer and musician who has worked on many albums on the island that have been game-changing and musical cornerstones for many of us. Every project he touches turns to gold. His latest project, IFE, takes us on an electronic journey based on Yoruba teachings and musical influences elevated to a futuristic level the world has never seen before.

Oferenda – “Alumbramiento”

I know very little about this contemporary project but this song inspired me. Oferenda forged a new start in Afro-Caribbean music. This piece is a blessing that few people know about.

International dub Ambassador – “Te Crees Tú”

Puerto Rico’s main dub reggae project is back with a more vocal approach, but they still stick with the dub elements they are known for. Mixed by yours truly.

Ralfi Pagan – “Do it with you”

The legendary Puerto Rican guitarist and studio musician for Fania Records Ralfi Pagan has made his solo records completely inspired by soul. Playing salsa for New York’s top musicians and writing a completely different style of music for his own work really shows the versatility of Ralfi. Very underrated record, but as good as any other Fania album of the time. Ralfi is the bridge between Puerto Rican heritage and New York, to the famous West Coast soul sound popularized by Art Laboe.
