House of Gucci and The Last Duel director Ridley Scott was asked to do a wizarding movie by Disney, but ultimately declined the offer.
Ridley Scott, Director of Gucci House and The last duel, says that Disney asked him to do a film about wizards, which he refused due to lack of interest. One of the most prolific and influential directors of all time, Scott is known for directing Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and The Martian. At 84, Scott has been working steadily since his original film The Duelists in 1977.
Scott’s most recent film, Gucci House, follows the marriage between Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) and their struggle for control of the Gucci fashion empire. The film garnered buzz at the Oscars for performances by Lady Gaga and Jared Leto, as well as production design and costumes. Scott defended the film against critics, with some decrying it as superficial and melodramatic.
In an interview with THR, Scott recounts how he was asked to direct a wizarding movie for Disney after buying Fox in 2019, Scott’s longtime home studio. He says the movies he chooses as he gets older have to be about something and mean something to someone, and can’t just be entertainment. He further talks about treating his films with restraint, if not making them boring. Read his quote below:
“The older I get, the more I look for things that on something, it’s not just entertainment, it has to have an effect on someone. They (Disney) wanted me to do a wizard movie, and I don’t make wizard movies. It wasn’t a good idea.
Gucci House grossed over $120 million against a budget of $75 million, turning a post-COVID box office profit. His other film to see in 2020, The last duel only made $30 million at the box office against its $100 million budget. Scott’s next project, haversack, will cover the life of Napoleon and his relationship with his wife Josephine, played by The crown starring Vanessa Kirby.
As Hollywood blockbusters increasingly gravitate to being just superhero movies, it’s becoming increasingly rare to see big-budget films about more typically niche topics. With Gucci House‘s box office success, Scott continues to prove that there are audiences out there looking for great movies that are more than just one genre. Even with such a firmly established legacy, Scott continues to push himself and his fans into new and interesting territory, spanning all sorts of genres and subject matter. With haversack already on the way, Ridley Scott is already perfecting and deepening his craft – no wizard needed.
