In a star-studded tribute concert to the deeply influential rock band Big star, Mike Mills from REM, Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan, dB’s Chris Stamey and many more performed in honor of the band on Sunday, November 7th.
The concert was held at St. Ann & Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn, New York. Mike Mills and the other artists have teamed up with original band drummer Jody Stephens to perform some of Big Star’s biggest hits including “September Gurls”, “Back Of A Car” and “In The Street”. In the historic setting of the church, a limited number of fans were able to attend the performance of the tributary.
Many of these artists also collaborated when they did a series of concerts in homage to the legendary Big Star. Lover of the third / sister, including during the 2012 edition of SXSW in Texas.
Big Star received critical acclaim while they were active in the early to mid-1970s and although they never quite enjoyed the commercial success that many other rock bands of the era did, they have become cult level stars. They went on to inspire countless contemporary musicians with their distinctive alternative rock sound.
Also in REM News, Craft Recordings released the 25th anniversary of REM’s tenth studio album, New adventures in Hi-Fi, October 29.
The bonus-packed 2-CD / 1-Blu-ray Deluxe Edition offers a wealth of audiovisual content, including the recently remastered album, 13 B-sides and Rarities, an unreleased 64-minute outdoor screening film ( shown on buildings in five cities in 1996 to promote the album’s original release), and an unreleased 30-minute EPK.
In addition, the Blu-ray features new Hi-Fi adventures in stunning high-resolution audio and 5.1 surround sound, as well as five restored HD video clips, including “Bittersweet Me”, “Electrolite” and “E- Bow the Letter ”. Housed in a 52-page hardcover book, the collection includes archival photographs, many of which have never been published, as well as new cover notes from journalist Mark Blackwell and reflections from the original four members of the group. , as well as Patti Smith, Thom Yorke, and producer Scott Litt.
