“I ENJOY the cool weather and the openness of the house,” said the owner of the newly built family rest home in the cool Eden Highlands, east of Davao. It was designed as a mountain getaway for the family of six looking to escape the confines and heat of the city during the pandemic.
It’s a contemporary rustic weekend cottage in a manageable size, according to the owner, who designed it to his specifications with help from his daughter-architect-baker. It sits high on the sloping terrain surrounded by towering trees and lush foliage. The east orientation of the house allows residents to take advantage of the morning sun, whether they are in the large bedroom on the second floor or in the adjoining veranda and terrace that hug both sides of the house.
Daylight enters through the large windows and the wide glass accordion door that illuminates the ground floor spaces. The latter provides a seamless connection between the interior and the outdoor dining and entertaining spaces.
On the ground floor, the absence of walls between the kitchen and the living room creates a large room. The unobstructed line of sight between the two areas, creamy white walls, easy to maintain whitewashed wood finish ceramic floor tiles, good light fixtures and lots of natural light streaming in give off a feeling of spaciousness.
The living room is furnished with rustic furniture from the collection of the owner of the city residence. To complete the look, the kitchen cabinets are designed in the same theme, in a color that matches the rest of the interior designs.
“Since we love to cook, the kitchen is an integral part of the house,” the owner said.
Merlgen Euro Designs was asked to execute the owner’s modular cabinet requirement. It’s not the first time the client has called on Merlgen: “They were the ones who supplied the cabinets for our modular kitchens in our apartments three years ago,” she said.
Expressing her requirements for the kitchen in the rustic-themed nursing home, “I need a pantry and storage space for kitchen appliances when we’re not using it. It will need to fit a few stoves and a dishwasher among other necessary appliances. I need to have room for everything.
“The client was very satisfied with the previous project. While familiar with the services and products Merlgen can offer, the library of materials has since grown. So, for their new nursing home, we sent them samples of the new cabinetry and countertop materials in the colors that matched their design concept,” explained Honeylet Lim, Director of Merlgen.
Among the options, the client selected elm colored wood grain finish for the cabinets and super white quartz for the countertops. The finishes will match the tone of the wooden furniture and overall complement the rustic look the client wanted to achieve.
The kitchen design uses two L-shaped walls of the residence. Along the left wall, overhead and counter cabinets, as well as a pantry provide generous space for the homeowner’s storage needs. The refrigerator sits on this side while the wide counter comfortably accommodates the coffee maker, toaster oven and microwave with ample space for other items.
Installed along the right wall, the first of two stoves with a hood, a dishwasher, a kitchen sink and a counter with cabinets are installed. Open shelving overhead also provides space for heavily used items and decor. A white framed window above the kitchen sink fills the space with natural light.
Connecting the divided kitchen spaces is the large island in the center, where the second cooker is fitted. More storage space is provided in this freestanding cabinet while the wide counter doubles as an alternative food prep and breakfast area. The centerpiece of the kitchen is lit by rustic pendant lights in the same color as the appliances.
In today’s lifestyle where transitional style space works best, the kitchen has become an extension of the living area, not just a cooking area. Thus, the section must be well designed and as “well dressed” as the rest of the spaces used for entertainment.
“Our kitchen cabinet and drawer design requirements were met,” said the Merlgen production owner.
For the new project, the recurring client gave her feedback, “They are very professional and maganda ang trabaho (they did a good job).”
