China’s new ferry port looks like a space base

Located in the heart of China, the city of Chongqing is one of the most populated cities in the world with a population of 35 million. This huge city will soon host a breathtaking construction project. A new ferry terminal will be built in the city; The building that spans the bay will look like something out of a science fiction novel. The building will function as the Juntan International Cruise Center.

The project is developed by the architecture firm Mad Architects. The aforementioned company mainly used round and oval shapes to design this giant 430-meter-long center. The six buildings overlooking the Yangtze River have 50 square meters of retail space and a 15 square meter cruise port.

The company team responsible for the project explains that they designed the center with a futuristic and somewhat surrealist approach. The building is covered with a floor-to-ceiling glazed aluminum wall. Giant skylights illuminate the interior. Work on the entire building, which will be carried out in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Construction Research, will start in November 2022 and end in 2027.

For several decades, the city of Chongqing has undergone a dazzling transformation, gaining 10 new inhabitants each year. The city has thus become a sort of experimental enterprise where architects house new arrivals. The new terminal, which seems to have come out of the Star Wars sets, is also part of this architectural evolution. It should come as no surprise that the city of Chongqing, which is experiencing such feverish activity, has become one of the world’s centers of cement production.
