Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama is known around the world for its colorful paintings, sculptures, performances and installations. Although his portfolio offers a range of mediums, Kusama’s art all have one thing in common: points!
Her colorful and dotted creations are a response to a strange experience she had as a child. As she sat in a field of flowers, she began to hallucinate that the flower heads created endless seas of dots. By covering the surfaces with polka dots, Kusama attempts to merge herself and her viewers with the universe. “Our earth is just one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos,” she said. “Peas are a path to infinity. When we erase nature and our bodies with polka dots, we are part of the unity of our environment.
Kusama’s work is also shaped by his childhood love for pumpkins. Unlike the somewhat frightening experiences she had with peas and flowers, Kusama found solace in pumpkins. “I love pumpkins,” the artist said in 2015, “because of their humorous form, warmth, and human quality.” From detailed drawings to public sculptures, Kusama’s stylized interpretations of the humble gourd have become some of his best-known works.
